MEDITATION

WHAT IS MEDITATION?  

Meditation is the process of quieting and resting the mind to attain a state of inner awareness. While meditating, you have to clear your mind so that you are relaxed and stay inwardly focused. Forget the external world or events that are taking place around you. 

Meditating is just like giving yourself an inner vacation, and some of the advantages of meditating are physical relaxation and emotional calmness. 

HOW TO START MEDITATION  

Meditation is a simple practice, but it is not always easy. If you are new to meditation, start slowly by practicing it for five minutes every day. Gradually increases your meditation time over several weeks. 

To start your meditation, find a comfortable place where you can sit on the floor or upright on a chair resting your feet on the floor.  Close your eyes and focus on breathing in and out. You can meditate anywhere either in your home or your office. 

HOW TO PRACTICE FOR MEDITATION 

Find a good spot with little distraction. You can decide to sit on the floor but if you are sitting on a chair or park bench, make sure it is stable and not hanging backward. Cross your legs comfortably and if seated on a chair, make sure your feet touch the floor. Straighten your upper body and let your hands drop on top of your legs. Relax and bring all your attention to your breathing. Choose the amount of time you want to meditate. 

TYPES OF MEDITATION 

There are many types of meditation. While meditating, all you need is being focused. Some methods of focusing include; 

  • Gazing- this is looking at an actual object with eyes closed. 

  • Breathing- concentrating all your efforts on breathing in and out. 

  • Sound- you can repeat a mantra, a phrase or any other music. 

  • Visualizing- picturing an object with your eyes closed. 

From the list below you can choose which one works best for you. 

  • Mindfulness Meditation 

This is done by sitting. In a cross-legged position, close your eyes with your back straight and place all your attention in breathing in and out and focus on the present moment. This type of meditation will reduce your anxiety, depression, and distress. 

  • Concentration meditation 

This is where your attention is focused on a single object while your eyes are closed. Here you can also recite a mantra or visualize a picture or an object. 

  • Loving Kindness Meditation 

Sit down in a meditation pose, close your eyes and start generating mind and heart feelings of kindness and love. Start developing love and compassion towards self and then proceed to others. Imagine a state of other beings and wish them happiness and peace. 

This kind of meditation will boost your ability to empathize with others, give you positive emotions increase your self-acceptance and have a loving attitude towards one another. 

If you need to improve your relationship with people and you are too hard on yourself and others, this type of meditation will help you. 

  • Mantra Meditation 

A mantra is a word or syllable repeated for focusing your mind. It is practiced while sitting down, eyes closed and a straight back. While reciting the mantra, your mind will experience more profound levels of awareness. 

  • Movement Meditation 

This is meditation practiced while walking, gardening or any other gentle form of motion. It is an active form of meditation good for people who find peace by allowing their minds to wander. 

  • Zen Meditation 

It is usually done while seated on the floor or chair. Focus your breath, and you can count one to ten and repeat this for some time. 

There are other types of meditation but by practicing the above you are assured of stress reduction, mental clarity and greater self-awareness.
